If you’ve been to any of the other seven Standard hotels in the world, then you will be expecting a lot from this one. With locations in New York, Miami and the Maldives to name a few, the hotel is known to host a number of famous faces and celeb after parties. But this is not your average night at The Avery. Think less Chloe Simms and more Frank Ocean. After all, the famous Solange and Jay Z lift altercation was in The Standard New York.
Located opposite Kings Cross Station, Double Standard is the downstairs bar at the London hotel. Walking through a pretty green garden, you already feel like you’re miles away from the hustle and bustle of one of London’s busiest stations.
Once inside, it’s clear to see that they have not saved on decor. The TFL inspired design wasn’t as obvious to me, instead it felt more like being transported to a 1970’s shindig.
We were immediately greeted by friendly staff who quickly showed us to our table. A quick note on the staff, it’s most likely a prerequisite for getting the job, but they all fit the vibe of The Standard. By that, I mean uber-cool. Once seated the service was not overbearing, which I liked, but be prepared to wait a while before you can grab someone’s attention for your next drinks order.
Food
Initially the food menu seemed exciting, including everything from burgers to moules-frites. However after ordering I was slightly underwhelmed. Whilst the food all looked great, it did come out pretty cold. For some of the dishes this was ok, but I would have definitely preferred the boil in the bag Co-op mussels instead. I would recommend getting the jalapeño slaw though, it has just the right amount of heat.
Drink
The cocktail list is as expected, with some twists on the classics, such as a G & Tea (yes it’s an earl grey infused gin), gherkin martini and ginger margarita. All nice, all quirky. The beers and wines include a small selection from around the world. There will most likely be something on the menu that you will enjoy.
Atmosphere
Go to the Double Standard for a chilled yet chic Friday night. You can sit at the bar, or grab a table whilst sipping your old fashioned and listening to the DJ soothe your soul with the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.
Overall
Double Standard is the perfect place to take a date, or catch up with friends over a cocktail and some neo-soul. Maybe skip dinner, grab some snacks, and post-up at the bar. Luckily, Double Standard lives up to its reputation and not its name.
