When I heard there was a place that specialised in desserts and champagne in Central London, I was shook. Right there, in the middle of Regent Street, was probably one of my dream venues.
Cakes & Bubbles is the brainchild of Michelin Star chef Albert Adrià. After an extremely successful pop-up at the Hotel Cafe Royal, Albert decided to finally open his first permanent establishment outside of Spain.
I was not disappointed. In fact, my mind was blown by the incredibly delicate and intricate desserts available at Cakes & Bubbles. But then again Albert Adrià was voted the World’s Best Pastry Chef by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and I completely understand why.
Cakes
Available from noon until 10pm, Cakes & Bubbles offer a sweet afternoon bubbles menu which provides all of their desserts with accompanying bubbles. Displayed beautifully on a luxurious three tiered display, this option is a great chance to taste your way through their incredible menu. But be aware, the portions aren’t full sized.
You can of course pick a few and order them in their full sized glory. Choose from the Golden Egg Flan, Crispy “Air Pancake” or Chocolate Cork. But in my opinion, you should go for the cheesecake.
Presented as a regular block of cheese, this modern take on a cheesecake is to die for. Firstly the biscuit base is given as a plate of hand made biscuits that you dip into the filling. The rest is a light, fluffy, absolutely indulgent circle of baron bigod cheese, hazelnut and white chocolate. There’s no surprise as to why this is the most popular thing on the menu. Like Joey, you will not want to share.
If you feel a sugar high coming along, Cakes & Bubbles do have a small selection of savoury dishes, to keep you going.
Bubbles
The drinks list is immense. Spanning a total of five pages for just the wine alone, the entire list including beers, cocktails and spirits is a whopping 10 pages long. They have every type of drink you could want to accompany both the savoury and sweet dishes. It’s safe to say a lot of thought has gone into this menu.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure what to order though. The waiting staff are well equipped with knowledge and recommendations on both the cakes and the bubbles. They were also extremely attentive and super friendly, which really makes a difference in an establishment of this calibre.
Decor
Think modern day luxury with a hint of timeless elegance. That’s what you’ll get as soon as you step inside Cakes & Bubbles. The theme runs effortlessly throughout the Hotel Cafe Royal so the fantasy is not broken if you need to pop to the loo. A lot of gold, marble and expensive champagne is displayed tastefully around this small yet spacious place.
Price
Ranging from an £8 larger to a £210 bottle of Grande Cuvée, it really does depend on what type of outing you’re after. The afternoon bubbles menu ranges from £36 to £46 per person, depending on the type of champagne you choose. Whereas the individual desserts average to around £10 each (the cheesecake is £12, I know you’re wondering).
Overall
Whether you want a classy break from your shopping to sit and watch the hustle and bustle of Regents Street pass you by, or you’re looking to celebrate something in style, you have to go to Cakes & Bubbles. I guarantee it won’t be your only visit. Check it out here.
