Dehesa: The Guinea Pig Review

As an extremely indecisive person, tapas is my saving grace when it comes to food. No longer do I have to make a concrete decision and then get food envy when everyone else’s orders are laid down beside me. The option to try as many dishes as my stomach can tolerate is a God send.

Part of the Salt Yard Group that own Salt Yard, Ember Yard and Opera Tavern, Dehesa is in good company. The food here is based on Spanish and Italian tapas, and is the perfect informal dining experience.

Food

Equipped with the tapas regulars such as jamón, patatas bravas and an array of cheeses, Dehesa host a selection of their own creations too, including courgette flowers. NB: I have had these previously at Salt Yard, however this time they did arrive looking very greasy, I’m hoping this is a one off.

Dehesa’s food is fresh, tasty and aesthetically pleasing. Perfect for filling up those instagram feeds. The portions though are sometimes questionable, even for tapas. The aforementioned courgette flowers were £8 for just two pieces.

The dessert menu is small but powerful. I went for the burnt basque cheesecake and the bitter chocolate mousse with gariguette strawberries, both were divine. A beautiful way to end a stunning meal.

Some cheesy favourites of mine were the mahon a la plancha with blossom honey, and the burrata.

Drinks

Dehesa’s wine list is pretty good. Now I’m no connoisseur, but there were enough options here to keep me happy, with three to four choices in each category for light, medium and full wines.

The cocktail menu is exciting. Alongside your regulars, there are also some fascinating alternatives, such as the Dehesa Passion and the Amalfi Breeze, which packs a punch!

Service

As with the Salt Yard, Dehesa’s service is brilliant. All the wait staff were pleasant, and happy to give their recommendations when asked.

Our food and drinks were served on time, which was commendable considering it was the first week out of lockdown, and the outdoor dining was packed.

If you’re planning to visit soon, make sure you have a booking in advance.

Location

Just off of Carnaby Street, in the heart of Soho, this location has it’s pros and cons. It’s easily accessible for all of your friends, no matter where they work. However, it is right by a tourist trap.

If you like being surrounded by hoards of people and lively bars, this is perfect. If you prefer the same great taste, but in a quieter setting, head over to the Salt Yard for a mildly calmer meal.

Price

As mentioned above, the portions could be better, so the pricing isn’t as reasonable as you would have hoped. The average price for a meat or fish dish is £10, and a vegetarian option it’s around £8.

Overall

My advice is to go here to graze with some drinks, or for a light lunch. That way you can get away with three or four plates per person (including a shared dessert), and still have a wonderful time.
