You know that feeling: it’s creeping up to 1pm, your tummy is rumbling and you’ve exhausted all of your usual lunch spots. Well, imagine my joy when I saw that Bao Noodle Shop was opening in Shoreditch! As a lover of all things bao and noodles, it was fair to say, I was ecstatic.
Inspired by the noodle shops of Taiwan, the restaurant isn’t huge, but is packed full of tables, seats and stools so you can perch around the kitchen and watch the chefs do their thing.
If you’re there for dinner, you can carry your night on in the downstairs bar, which includes a karaoke machine.
Food
The menu is small but punchy. Expect two traditional beef noodles, with a couple of vegan options, a few side dishes including dumplings and fried chicken, and six bao options (one being a fried Horlicks ice cream bao).
To be honest, for a place where bao and noodles were in the title, I expected to see them featured more on the menu.
Nevertheless, I ordered my lunch. Some pickles and two portions of bao (FYI, you only get one bun per plate). I was still hungry. The portions are TINY!
I was kicking myself that I didn’t go for the noodles, however seeing someone on the opposite tables’ portion, I don’t think it would have helped much.
The food at Bao Noodle Shop is small, but tasty. I couldn’t fault the quality of flavours, and it was the one saving grace of this new restaurant.
Price
Shock number two was when the bill came. Ok ok, I know I had the prices in front of me when I ordered, but in my defence, I thought the price was for a normal sized portion.
The noodles are around £12 per bowl, or £9 for the vegan option. The bao buns range from £5.50 – £7.50 each.
Overall
If you’re willing to spend £20 on a casual yet tasty lunch where you’ll leave hungry, go to Bao Noodle Shop in Shoreditch. I don’t even want to think about how much my dinner would have cost.
